Reading, Writing, and Teaching the Holocaust

The Holocaust Educator Network of Michigan Satellite Summer Seminar:

Kalamazoo, MI August 7 - 13, 2011

What: A week-long, residential, writing project program in Kalamazoo for Michigan writing project educators focused on reading, writing, and teaching about the Holocaust and other issues of historic and contemporary social justice. Participants will meet survivors, read and study literature from the Holocaust, hear lectures, and travel to social justice sites in Michigan. All of our work will be done using powerful writing project teaching and learning strategies: sharing our own thoughts, experiences, practices, and writing in a community of like-minded educators.

Who: There is space for a two-person team from each writing project site in Michigan made up of Teacher Consultants and/or Site Leaders interested in and committed to Holocaust and Social Justice education.

When: The program begins with an opening dinner on Sunday evening, August 7, and ends after a closing dinner on Saturday, August 13.

Where: Most of the program will take place at Transformations Retreat Center in Kalamazoo, though we will have an overnight trip to the Detroit area to visit the Holocaust Memorial Center and other social justice sites.

How: The program is funded by a generous grant from The Memorial Library and Art Collection of the Second World War in New York City, a foundation established by Holocaust survivor Olga Lengyel. Each writing project site will be asked to provide a modest amount of additional financial support for participants.

Why: To build leadership capacity at each writing project site in Holocaust and social justice education, to increase each writing project site’s focus on social justice education, to put teachers in touch with Holocaust and social justice education resources across our state, to build a state-wide network of writing project teachers creating and sharing resources, and to connect our network with the national Holocaust Educator Network established over the last six summers by writing project teachers across the country who participated in the Summer Seminar on Holocaust Education at the Memorial Library and Art Collection of the Second World War in New York City, a foundation established by Holocaust survivor Olga Lengyel.
