The core experience of the Third Coast Writing Project is the
invitational summer institute
, a professional development program for successful teachers and administrators from all levels. Based on the National Writing Project model of "
teachers teaching teachers"
, the program features the following elements:
Outstanding presenters, including veteran classroom teachers, who model exemplary teaching strategies, and authors, who teach us to become teacher writers;
Reading and discussion focused on best classroom practice and current theory and research;
A diverse group of teachers from a range of school districts across Southwest Lower Michigan, teaching levels (kindergarten to college), and content areas, focusing on their personal, professional learning goals and collaborating with others doing the same;
Time for writing and responding to the writing of others;
Coached teaching demonstrations presented by summer institute fellows; and
A spirit of fun as new professional friendships grow in a dynamic network of motivated educators.
